With Angels and Archangels
This recording represents three composers of the twentieth century with differing music styles and interpretation of the Mass. They range from the sensuous jazzy harmony of Howells to the astringent explosive textures of Langlais. Each mass is used regularly in our service and each is identified with a particular Sunday. By contrast the Howells Collegium Regale is a work of sublime veneration, deep understanding and sensuous tones; a Mass for the initiated who wish to feel the greater love and present of the Creator. Kodaly also has many of the color qualities found in Langlais but with its own text painting and musical structure. There is the penitent Kyrie, joyful Gloria with suitable petitions in the middle, a solid Creed, mystical Sanctus, sublime Benedictus and we return to the penitent Agnus Dei. The organ Ite Missa Est finishes the work with and exultant sense of completion. The Kodaly is the most balance of the three works, particularly for a concert program.
